Raisin in the Sun - Final Draft

A man must become a flaming spear, and cross hills and valleys, before he can stand on land that belongs to him, and rightfully call himself a man. The book, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, is the story of a family that recieves news that Ruth Younger's husband has died and that he has left $10,000 to his name in the form of life insurance. Each person in the family has plans on using the money to achieve their respective dreams, but Lena spends the money on Beneatha's education and a house in a white neighborhood. Lena Younger transfers the money to Walter so that he can become rightful patriarch of the family, but he loses the money to a scam artist, and the Younger Family is left bitter and angry at Walter for losing the money. There are two movie adaptations to the book A Raisin in the Sun, and two respective actors that give their own interpretations to the character Walter. Walter Younger is also an important character in the climax and closing scenes of the movie, and the two Walters serve as a parallel, to which stronger qualities can be contrasted.
The two actors that play Walter Younger, Sidney Poitier and Sean Combs respectively, give parallels to the character Walter that can be contrasted by acting ability, accurate portrayal of a character, and the more effective interpretation of the two. Sidney Poitier plays Walter Younger in the 1961 adaptation of the movie. The scene where Walter and Beneatha are goofing around, shows Sidney Poitier's ability as an actor to suddenly transform from a stoic, lone wolf protagonist into a wild and jovial fool. Sidney Poitier takes the task of becoming a "flaming spear", and leaps onto a table and enacts the thrusting motions of his imaginary spear, with the enthusiasm of a tribesman, while playing off of the dancing and rhythm of Beneatha. This performance by Sidney Poitier is contrasted to the seemingly relaxed Sean Combs version of Walter, where he conducts the tribal dance with less passion, and Sean Combs does not leap on a table, which was the highlight of Sidney Poitier's performance. Sidney Poitier is the stronger of the two actors in terms of acting ability. Both characters play Walter Younger accurately, but Sidney Poitier plays off of Walter's situtation better. The scene in the first movie, where Walter confronts George and attacks him while making fun of his college fashion's "faggoty-looking white shoes", shows Walter's growing frustration that his big dreams and plans are getting him nowhere.

A dream deferred over a long period of time is what brings men to desperation, and sometimes to their knees. In the movie, A Raisin in the Sun, a family's dreams rely on the insurance money of the dead patriarch of the family. Walter Lee Younger Jr. is a 35-year-old man with dreams of soaring into success (allusion to icarus flying too close to the sun) but his matriarch mother Lena Younger, and his job as a white man's limo driver, serve to send Walter's dreams crashing down on wax wings. Walter Younger wants to use his father's inheritance money to start up a liquor business, but his hopes are dashed immediately by his mother, who uses the half of the money on a home in a white neighborhood, and the rest of the money for his sister Beneatha's education. Lena sees the error of her ways, and grants Beneatha's education money to Walter, so that he can take up reign as rightful patriarch of his family, but Walter gets scammed out of the money and endures the wrath of his family. In a comparison between the two movies, different actors for Walter Younger serve to give two spectrums for the character in terms of acting ability, accuracy and effectiveness. The different actors also create a parallel of character relationships between Walter and his mother, Lena.

Sidney Poitier and Sean Combs are the two actors that take the role of Walter Younger, which is significant because they also give different interpretations of the character, based on how their acting ability as Walter, and the accuracy of their performance.

In movie one, Walter Lee Younger is played by Sidney Poitier, the stoic black man prone with wild outbursts of anger. I think that Poitier's portrayal of Walter is more effective because it is one of a crazed man, and is desperate for another chance at success. Poitier plays Walter more effectively because I relate with him easier. The scene where Walter interrogates George about being a college boy with "faggoty-looking white shoes" shows how angry Walter is that his big dreams are not being realized, while George with the "faggoty-looking white shoes" has a world of opportunities. Movie one's walter swings wildly from desperate anger to desperate because he has hit rock bottom. The scene where Lena finds out that Walter has made away with all the family's money, exhibits that Walter has swung from anger to extreme despair. The scene with Lena and Walter in movie one is the more effective, because Walter is on his knees sobbing, in a fetal position, while Lena looms overhead, hands clenched, ready to strike down on Walter. The Walter Younger in the 2001 A Raisin in the Sun movie, played by Sean Combs, is more calm and composed throughout the movie, but still has his moments of anger. I think this version of Walter Younger is less effective because I could not relate to him. In the position that Walter Younger was in, I think a person would have fallen to the random acts of destruction and anger that the first movie's Walter embodies.

ends meet, when an surprise in the form of a $10,000 life insurance
check arrives for the Younger family. (Each member
of the family has intentions to use the money to make a better life for
themselves, and they have to figure out how to use the money. Walter
Younger has intentions to use the money to carve a better life for his
family, and invest in a liquor business, but his matriarchal mother
objects, and as head of the family she spends the money)
